Oh the joys of aging!

March SOLC–Day 11

This poem was my attempt to have a bit of fun with one of the less than appealing symptoms of aging. (If you’re under 35 and/or male, you may not be able to relate.)

The Battle

There once was a hair on my chin
undetected when first it grew in
I noticed it there
Adrift in the air
And yanked it out with great chagrin.

Another one grew on my cheek.
(It happened in less than a week!)
I pulled that one too
without great ado
But with a full bellicose shriek.

It’s said that in some far-flung places
Facial hair adorns women’s faces
But I can’t sport a ‘stache
with elan or panache
I vow to remove any traces.

My tweezers now flash through the air
Extracting each invading hair
There is not a thing cute
’bout my face so hirsute
I battle with growing despair.

Each day my reflection as mirrored
Shows renegade hairs have appeared
My expression is grim
As I tweeze and I trim
Not resigned to displaying a beard.

I continue the gods to implore
to vanquish these whiskers galore
They’re more apt to dispatch
A peach-fuzzy soul patch
I win battles but never the war.

You are a very talented poet! My friend keeps tweezers in her car because she says you get the best natural light there and you have a handy mirror! 🙂

Well done, you. Ordinarily I’m not a fan of rhyming, but you didn’t sacrifice one bit of sense for sound!
P.S. I too remember my first chin hair. Oh my.

I loved your poem, but I loved the comments as well! I keep tweezers in the car, and am sure I’ve grossed out some passers by but…what can I do? they’s got to come off! 😉 well done!

How funny! Luckily, growing older creeps up slowly.

  10. Love that you found humor in this losing battle, Molly. Why didn’t anyone ever tell us this would be part of our morning routine?

Thanks for the smile today. Enjoyed your clever poem — aging and all that comes with it is inevitable, but humor helps a lot :).

Such a lesson for us all to learn, to laugh at what we struggle to control. Love those ‘flashing tweezers’.

Wow what a poem! It’s inspiring that you kept adding to it and tinkering with it to make it perfect. Yes I remember my first chin hair too- actually my boyfriend(now husband) pointed it out to me. I feel like my experience would have a totally new stanza.

HA! I just attacked some hairs yesterday! (I’m sure there are more today, but I’m choosing not to look!) I, too, adore your rhymes. My favorite is cute/hirsute!

Oh yes, keep those tweezers handy. Next comes uncontrollable nose hair. It’s like shafts of wheat.
