If I were to accept this gilded invitation
to step upon the moonlit path and
feel the cool water pooling
beneath my shoeless feet,
flowing between my toes…
If I were to follow the shining trail
’til I stood directly
below the glowing orb
and tilted my face upward
to bathe in moonshine
then rose on tips of toes
and stretched one hand
up, up, up…
Would I discover it still
out of reach?

I think the beauty of the moon lies in its being just “out of reach”… it is somehow disappointing to know we have put people and things on something so pristine. Could we have been satisfied with a dream to walk on the moon? Beautiful poem and photo! There are a number of moon poems out today!

This is a lovely compliment to the moon poem linked by Tabatha. Like the way you’ve captured a child’s (or what could be a child’s) viewpoint in the last lines.

Love the mirrored shape of the moonlit path in your poem, and the wondering, of course. “feel the cool water pooling
beneath my shoeless feet,”==these details bring the path into 3D being so beautifully!

Thanks for the link, Diane! The first science unit I’m teaching in my new 4th grade position is entitled (something like) Sun, Moon, Stars. What a perfect opportunity to integrate some moon poems and maybe even have a moon viewing party!!
