March 2018 SOLC–Day 13

Struggling for a post today, I decided to revisit the draft file on my blog. I have over 100 drafts in that file. It’s a hodgepodge of quick thoughts, rough drafts, photographs and half-baked ideas–sort of a virtual notebook. Like my notebooks, this file is a great place to return to and mine for ideas. This morning, I came across a poem I’d started writing several months ago. For whatever reason, it caught my fancy and I tinkered with it a bit. With a winter storm threatening, autumn posts don’t seem particularly appropriate, but it’s what I’ve got today!
Autumn Blossoms
Blossoms transform
in late autumn
into subtle shades
and shapes
festive tousled cotton tops
bob above the dimming grass
fading blooms sigh
against rough barn shingles
and the low-lying sun
slants through antique glass
to cast wavering shadows
of late gathered blossoms
on the hallway wall

Nix the comfort zone 
I’m visualizing flowers changing to seed and stems drooping. The image of the lines “fading blooms sigh/ against rough barn shingles.” I stopped by your post looking for some poetic inspiration and found it. Thanks for sharing!

A stash of drafts! I like that phrase! My drafts range from almost finished to a couple of words, sentences or just a picture. Mostly I do prefer to gather in my notebook –it feels more durable somehow.

Lots more snow blossoming up this way today. Are you getting any from this storm? We’re off today and I’m beginning to wonder what might happen tomorrow. That last day of school is moving farther and farther away!

love the line “fading blooms sigh” – I can hear it! It’s fun to mine “old” random thoughts and make them new again. As the snow falls here and my little world becomes white, I appreciate the image of a late fall and I imagine warm fall day! Thanks for sharing!

Enjoy the snow! It hasn’t started up here yet, but I’m anticipating lots of it! It’s so beautiful and I always enjoy a snow day, even knowing I’ll pay the price later on.

So I am not the first to love this line, “fading blooms sigh/against rough barn shingles”. I love the visual, auditory, and tactile images all rolled up into seven words. I wonder: is this about flowers and about aging? The second half of the poem has so many words that make me think about getting older.

Since I’ve hit 50 and become an empty nester, I think there are undertones of aging in much of what I write. Sometimes it’s deliberate. Sometimes not.

That’s a gorgeous poem! Particularly love “festive tousled cotton tops
bob above the dimming grass.” Makes me long for spring and warmer weather, actually. And I was just going through my blog drafts, too, and couldn’t believe how many I had abandoned. A snow day project is to see what I can resurrect. Thanks for the inspiration!

Yeah, those blog drafts sort of accumulated without my realizing it! I couldn’t believe there were more than 100 of them. Have fun sorting through yours today and enjoy the snow.

I must admit your title hooked me immediately. I like the image: “… wavering shadows / of late gathered blossoms / on the hallway wall.” I’ve been decluttering my draft stash (Hm… A slice title?). Putting things that are too rough still into a doc file. Maybe a waste of time. [sigh].

Alice, mine could definitely use some decluttering. I like your idea of putting things into a doc. file. I don’t think it’s wasted time as you’ll know what’s in there once you’re done. Also, you’ll probably find a few potential slice ideas! Always a plus!
