Sunday Morning
Outside, a single bird sings,
a river of notes
rises and falls
rises and falls
sunrise kindles the horizon
the air is faintly luminescent
with the soft glow of snow
Inside, the fire flares
in the wood stove
flames and shadows dance
The warming metal
tick tick ticks
The table lamp beside me
casts an amber circle of light
I take my pen in hand
and write.

I loved the tiny details you zoomed in on-the rise and fall, ticking-the writing painted a cozy picture in my head.

The bird call is what first caught my attention. Once I started to listen, there was so much more potential in the moment–so much to notice!

“Sunrise kindles the horizon” Ahh. I’m only noticing on a third look that you’ve woven fire into both stanzas. What a tranquil moment.

Beautiful poem. The repetition works really well, and I love the fire flares!

“Fire flares” was a last minute word change so I’m so glad you mentioned it! Thanks, Melanie!

It always gets down to just doing it. Not letting the excuses or the to-do lists get in the way, but doing it – writing. Then the magic happens. Another good reminder.

It’s amazing how often you find something to write if you just push yourself to sit down and try. Of course the daily posting is starting to wear a little bit! lol Only 12 more days!

Lovely! When you repeat the line “rises and falls” it lets me really hear the bird calling. It slows down the pace of the poem and let’s the reader feel that calmness of the morning! Perfect atmosphere for writing!

I love sitting before the wood stove, but I’m looking forward to retiring it for the season.

My favourite line is “sunrise kindles the horizon”. Perfect. I also notice the structure of the poem – inside, outside – and the onomatopoeia and focus on sound, as in “the soft glow of snow.” A lovely lovely poem. Thank you.
