December and the holidays lured me away from my notebook and to a different kind of poetry making—one that resulted in luscious chocolate fillings, crisp crusts, cinnamon-layered swirled sticky buns, and plush cakes. Yum!
I’ve gathered up some of the spare crumbs from my more traditional poetic efforts this month to share today. Here are two haiku, a something else, and then a silly double dactyl.

After enjoying far too many holiday goodies, I played around with a holiday double dactyl. (Update–I just put two and two together and realized that the idea for this double dactyl was greatly inspired by Michelle Heidenrich Barnes and her Santa-inspired double dactyl! Who can resist “Jolly Saint Nicholaus” as a double dactyl? Thanks for the inspiration, Michelle! )

This week’s Poetry Friday Roundup is hosted by Michelle Kogan who, as always, is lifting her voice in support of our planet. She’s sharing a nonet called “2020 Raise your voice!” and two related videos. Be sure to stop by and check out her post and visit a few others. Ring in the New Year with some poetry!
Ha! Your double dactyl is delightful…I feel Santa’s pain in the seams for sure. I have always loved the power of the word, “one” in a poem. It works beautifully in your, “one wild fox…” poem. So glad to see you out with your lens and your pen!

It’s been fun to have more time to be out and about taking photos. Writing time somehow hasn’t increased though…Enjoy the rest of your break!

Such a delightful post with yummy treats, one fox, and Santa’s busting seams! But I’m especially drawn to the Christmas cactus. I brought one home from my parents’ house this summer and it’s blooming! Mom says it never bloomed at Christmas time.

My mom always had a Christmas cactus and they’ve always reminded me of her. This year I finally bought one and have been so enjoying it. I’m not sure what took me so long! How delightful that yours is blooming right on schedule this year 🙂

Love everything, but mostly your second haiku — “memories of mom.” When my mother in law, with whom I was very close, passed away, I adopted her “Christmas” cactus. Honestly, it bloomed closer to Thanksgiving, but for many years, while it lasted, the blooms reminded me of our happy times together. Thank you, Molly!

I love your playful holiday double dactyl! “Reindeer despair” is a great ending.
Touched by your “memories of mom.”
I would happily look at more of your food photos. Impressive baking!

I’ve fallen off the writing track in these unscheduled days filled with doing. Good for you that you’ve captured some of your moments in words.
Poor reindeer! Make Santa run a few laps to get those inches off!

I inherited my mother’s orchids, so I recognize that reverie–especially when they (rarely) bloom. Your “Snickety Snackety” poem cracked me up. Happy New Year!

I’ve got to lay off on the “snickety snacking” myself! Happy New Year to you!

Playing with words is what I see in your double dactyl. I had to smile when I read “Reindeer despair”. Your photos of your baking creations is lovely but I bet the goodies are delicious. Is a baking poem rising in your kitchen? Have a good new year, Molly.

Poor St Nick, guess he indulged a bit too much… though he makes great fodder for your rollicking double dactyl! Great pic you captured of the fox it works so well with your poem. I’m a big fan of Christmas cactus’ and that’s another gorgeous image you took. I also like the memory it stirs of your Mom. Thanks for all Molly, and Wishes for a Happy New Year!

I enjoyed all of your poems–and the luscious photos, too. But I especially liked your double dactyl–it made me laugh. Your haiku about your mother is lovely, too. It really evokes a feeling of love and sadness for me. And of course, the fox–I’ve never heard a fox call, but I hear coyotes from time to time. They are really captivating.
Thanks for sharing all of these–and happy New Year!
