Here are three recent snippets from my classroom for your entertainment.
- “Mrs. Hogan, you know what I just realized?” A. said.
“What?”
“I dress like a gender reveal!”
“What!?” I asked, thoroughly confused. “What do you mean?”
“Well,” she explained, beaming, “today I’m all in blue and yesterday I was all in pink. It’s like I’m a gender reveal!”
2. We’d just finished reading a Charles Waters poem that ended with the lines:
“Then Mom says the dreaded words
no kid should ever have to hear…
“”Wait till your father gets home.”
The kids in my class groaned in commiseration.
“Yeah, that’s the worst!”
“Oh, yeah! My mom always says that!”
Then R. piped up, “Yeah!” He paused. “Well, actually, no. My dad’s more like a butterfly. Not a scorpion.”
Another pause. Then…
“That’s my mom.”
Ouch! Now that’s a stinger!
3. And finally, randomly in the middle of snack recently, M. called out, “And for today’s fun fact…teachers used to hit their students with rulers!”
This was apropos to nothing at all–I swear!
There’s never a dull moment in fourth grade!
Nix the comfort zone 
My fourth graders are the same! You can’t make this stuff up right!

Aren’t kids just the best? One thing about teaching that I think will always be a constant, even amidst all the other changes is how the kids can make us laugh. Thanks for sharing these with us!

I sometimes wonder what my own kids revealed about their lives in classrooms, these are just classic!

I think the most interesting one ever was when I was teaching first or second grade and a kid commented on the handcuffs in his mom’s dresser and how she said they were to catch a bad guy if she needed to! 😮

One of my favorite things about school is all the hilarious stuff the kids say! I teach second grade and I am in stitches with all the funny things that happen during my day. Yes, there’s stress and a million other hard things. I love how you highlighted these positive snippets!

I used to teach 1st and 2nd grades and miss the comments from the younger kids. I still remember a student’s answer on his math test when asked to write an explanation for how he solved the math problem. He wrote “I’ve been eating more Smartfood” and drew a picture of a bag of popcorn. He was totally serious 🙂

The random comments and ongoing conversations of kids in this age group are the best. All of these in one day, what a hoot!
