PF: Terse Verse

Poetry Friday: What is Poetry? | Reflections on the Teche

I hadn’t planned to participate in PF this week, but it is the first day of April Break, so I have time. And the weather isn’t too inviting for a photo jaunt. And then I read Kat Apel’s PF post, and her breezy, fun, creative terse verse inspired me to try my own. Thanks, Kat! I had so much fun playing around with these!! What a great way to head into spring break.

Here are my efforts, in no particular order.

Spring break started yesterday:
Slept in late! Feelin’ great!

On discovering hidden treasures in the garden
Violets pool. Springtime jewels.

When I see the local weather forecast on April 16th:
Snow’s due. Feeling blue.

The hill of scilla has launched into riotous bloom
Dazzling hue. River of blue.

Bird vs. Cat–A sad report on recent happenings in the garden:
Chirp. Slurp. Burp.

Ordered large pizzas on the commute home
Tough day eaten away.

When the seamstress isn’t returning your calls about altering your mother-of-the-groom dress and the wedding is in early June…
What’s the glitch?
I need a stitch
before the hitch!

I highly recommend reading Kat’s post and then trying your own hand at these terse verse. It’s slightly addictive!

This week’s PF Roundup is hosted by Jama at her blog, Jama’s Alphabet Soup. Jama’s posts are always a nourishing delight, so be sure to swing by and check out the happenings.

So fun to pop in here after Kat’s post. I must try this. I’m feeling tuckered out and have nothing but a few blank pages ready for writing. I love how this gives us a little slice of your life as well, the look forward to the wedding that will finally happen and your woes over more snow. I hope you enjoy your spring break. I feel like I need another one.

So fun, Molly! (and by extension, Kat!) Unfortunately, “Tough day eaten away.” is all too relatable. πŸ˜‰

  3. These are so much fun, Molly! Thankfully, the predicted snow didn’t materialize, and our violets are “pooling,” too. Love those surprise bursts of color. Enjoy your break!

We saw snow throughout the day and even into this morning, but it didn’t accumulate here. Aren’t you on break as well this week? (Sorry–I’ve lost track!)

Oh, these are fabulous, Molly. And such a joy to me, that I could inspire this little creative play for you, too. Loved your mother-of-the-groom humour. (How exciting!) Your pizza and bird Vs cat were tasty morsels. You’ve shared so much in these clever little snippets.

Love your terse verses — many of these made me smile. My favorites are probably Chirp. Slurp. Burp. and Tough day eaten away. πŸ™‚

Thanks, Jama! I felt horribly guilty even sharing the “Chirp. Slurp. Burp.” as I’m an avid bird watcher and know all-too-well the the damage cats inflict on the bird population isn’t a laughing matter.

Oh so glad you tried these. You surely have inspired me to get over to Kat’s blog. Terrific. Terse Verse, I had not heard of these. Enjoy spring break. So many to love but I could easily relate to Snow’s due. Feeling blue.

I adore the terse verse poems you shared and hope to use them as mentor text, Molly. Enjoy your break and are there congratulations in order – Mother-of-the-groom for June???

Thanks, Carol. The wedding was supposed to be last May and they just decided to go ahead and have it this June. It’s a bit frantic, but also exciting. πŸ™‚

Weddings are such a wonderful way to bring family and friends together. Your son and his bride will never forget this day especially since COVID postponed the original time together. I hope photos come our way.

I wrote a few in my comment to Kat. They are fun. I think I’ll keep writing & save them up for a May post! What fun to start your break with these, Molly. You may be rhyming all week! I love that “What’s the glitch?
    I need a stitch
    before the hitch!” So funny!

  12. Chirp. Slurp. Burp. made me laugh aloud–a complete story in three words. Thanks for these fun verses, and I hope your dress is fixed on time!

The seamstress called back, so that’s good, but now I’m totally unsure about my dress. I bought it a year ago for the originally planned date and now I’m like…is it really what I want!? lol I’m driving myself crazy!

  13. Molly, these are a joy! And I was going to write almost the exact same thing Buffy said above. I laughed at that one (and then felt a little guilty). Fingers crossed on the dress! Our older daughter married last June, with many changes to the plans happening right up to the wedding week. Quite the roller coaster!

Thanks, Laura. I felt a bit guilty sharing the cat vs. bird one. The wedding was supposed to happen last May and it’s still a roller coaster this year. They’ve already cut their guest list in half and now with the recent surge in numbers, the town their reception is in has cut the state-mandated 100 person gathering limit down to 60. At this point, they’re just hoping things will settle down and the limit will go up again. We’ll see what happens!

  15. These are wonderful, bursting with excitement! Love the last two, but
I hope the glitch of the dress
    won’t loose more stitches
    and isn’t a mess…
    Thanks!

  16. I battle constantly with the neighbor and her cat who stalks my beloved birds day and night. Some day I’ll have to give terse verse a go. Yours are so fun, Molly. Hope your week off is going well!
