Walking through the woods this fall, I’ve discovered multitudes of mushrooms in all shapes and sizes. This particularly delicate one, the only one of its kind I’ve seen, caught my fancy and sent my thoughts swirling to the world of fairies. After the festivities end
and dawn’s light fringes the sky,
who tucks away
the fairy paraphernalia
so no discerning human eye
casts a canny glance
at petalled paths
and circled stones?
Flush with late night revelry,
trailing dew-laden feet and
drooping wings,
might the sleepy wee folk
overlook
a wayward blossom
or other tell-tale sign-
perhaps this fairy parasol,
a dainty moonshine shield,
now illuminated
in sunshine’s glow
above an oddly tidy
bed of moss?

Oh, that fairy parasol, that moonshine shield! It doesn’t even look REAL. Lovely. Thank you, Molly. Happy Poetry Friday!

Thanks, Michelle. I’ve often thought of fairy frolics when I see milkweed silk strewn across plants. This is my first flight of fancy brought on by a mushroom 🙂

I’ve read of elves today, and now your beautifully imagined fairies, Molly. Wow, this is wonderful. I see many mushrooms in our mountains, but have never seen such “a dainty moonshine shield” as this. This calls for more fairy tales!

Lovely! I was especially pleased that you used the word ‘paraphernalia’ which is a favourite word and the title of a poem I recently had published.

Thanks, Sally. I must confess I had to double check to make sure I spelled it correctly. Would love to read your poem!

This is wonderful, Molly! So many beautiful images. I especially like “dawn’s light fringes the sky” as well as that “dainty moonshine shield”. Isn’t it amazing what treasures we find in the woods?

Thanks, Catherine. I’m not sure if the woods or the beach is my favorite place to treasure hunt, but either place I come away richer for the experience!

(My dad would say, “There’s a fungus among us.”) What a great photo and I love the poem. My mother used to delight in showing us fairy rings when we were small.
