March 2022 SOLC–Day 24
A huge thank you to Two Writing Teachers for all that they do to create an amazing community of writers and a safe, welcoming space to write, learn, share and grow.

It’s 5:15 am and I’ve already been in an argument.
mind: “Rise and Shine, it’s time to get up.”
body, yawning: “… but I’m tired.”
mind, in full cheerleeding mode: “I know, I know. It’s been a long week, but you can do it.”
body, groggily: “I don’t wanna.”
mind: “Ok, you don’t want to, but still, you really do have to get up.”
body: ………..
mind: “Listen, your alarm went off ten minutes ago. You need to get up. You haven’t even planned properly for the day.”
body, muffled: “ummmmmhmmmm”
mind: “Hey! HEY! I mean it! You have to get up! You’re going to regret it if you don’t!”
body, snuggling deeper into the blankets: “But I’m soooo cozy. And it’s cold out there!”
mind: “Listen. You only have two more days until the weekend. You can do it. And, you have no planning time today. You have to get going!”
body, petulant: “I don’t care.”
mind, after taking a slow deep breath and counting to 10: “You say that now. But you know how you’ll feel when you’re scrambling to get everything done.”
body: sigh
mind: “GET MOVING!”
body: “Okay, okay. I heard you. I know.”
A long minute passes…
mind: Hey!!! Hey!!! What are you doing!?! Take those covers off your head! NOW!”
silence
mind, desperate: “You have to get up! You know you do. In fact, you’re overdue for an observation! You really are. It could easily be today.”
body, bolting up, scrambling to pull back the covers: “Cr*p! Okay, okay! I’m up. What time is it anyway? Geez, you didn’t have to be so mean about it!”
And so the day begins…
Oh no! I’m a still asleep…I put my slice here instead of on the correct link and I can’t delete it now. I’m sorry!!!

Your title really caught my eye and having read your post I think its especially clever. Nice dialogue. I appreciated all the back and forth but especially the drama at the end- oh no, I cold be observed today!

Thanks! I find titles and dialogue difficult to write so your comment made my day 🙂

Oh, how the Universe aligns–I’m reading Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty most mornings, and this day’s installment was all about the mind fighting with the five senses when we let the latter do what they want. He also compared it to the parent-child relationship–and your argument was just that! Have a great day!

Now that sounds like an interesting book. Isn’t it funny how much overlap you bump into during this month?

A welcome start to the day: knowing that others hit snooze and argue with time, too. I love how you have done this. Especially the way you snuggled back into cozy covers – it had me feeling my sheets and soft blankets and feeling the warmth and comfort of sleep. One more clock argument and then two days off.

It’s actually unusual for me to avoid getting up, as I love my quiet morning time. Today was a struggle…probably because it’s Parent Teacher Conference week and that makes for long, long days.

I’m sorry, but this argument amuses me. Especially the mind’s endgame.

Glad I could amuse you 🙂 (And I didn’t get observed…today!)

Does your writing curriculum allow your students to play like you did with this Slice? If not, it should! Oh, I love the playfulness of the piece that speaks to us all.

Sadly, not really. I do have a writing club and I might share my slice with them as a mentor/prompt next week. I’m sure they’d have fun with the idea! Glad you liked it.

That inner dialogue that occurs throughout our day can be interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Somedays that inner dialogue is so long-winded that I’m amazed it doesn’t get laryngitis!

We definitely felt all the back and forth of a typical argument, where one knows who the winner is going to be ultimately! Lots of fun!

Thanks! It was a tough day to get out of bed, but it was a pretty good day overall (other than the weather!).

A very real struggle–at least you were only arguing with yourself! I certainly have days like that–and others when I am ready to bounce right out of bed. But parent conference week is exhausting, no wonder you need some extra snuggle minutes!

It really isn’t usually a struggle for me to get up. I do love my morning time.
