SOLC Day 19: Conferences

March 2024 SOLC–Day 19
A huge thank you to Two Writing Teachers for all that they do to create an amazing community of writers and a safe, welcoming space to write, learn, share and grow.

Careening through the days
One after another
Never enough time for planning, for sleeping, for a
Full breath or a short pause
Everyone is scurrying,
Run ragged, until…
Each family arrives with their child,
Nervous or excited, and we talk.
Celebrating growth and success
Envisioning next steps
Sitting and sharing together

Great structure for this one! But still, your language is so rich here. My favorites are: “full breath” “run ragged” Hope they went well today!

  2. Delightful creative acrostic! I loved conferences (most of the time!). I would never save a tough one til the end of the night. It had to be up against the next conference so we couldn’t linger. I think what made the conferences go well was that I was at Frisbee Middle School for 9 years and knew many of the parents in the small town of Kittery, Maine having had brothers and sisters. But more important, in September, I had called every parent with news about something good their kid had done that day. I tried to make five calls a day since I did have five classes with a total of 80 middle schoolers. The calls were great. What parent doesn’t want to hear something good about their kid! They were on my side. If I needed to make a tough call later in the year, they knew that I wasn’t just looking and finding something bad in their kid, I had called before with good news. Parents typically only get calls when things are going poorly. A challenging kid? I’d catch him doing something decent and call that day. It was a joyful month to start the school year!

Our principal encourages those early-in-the-year calls, and I make them every year. It’s a great way to touch base and open the doors to communication in a positive way. I love knowing you did this, too. (It in no way surprises me!)

oh! I love how this feels frantic until the children arrive. We have conferences Thursday evening & I will try to remember this feeling as I go into them.

That dichotomy–the exhaustion and the meaningful conversations all captured in an acrostic! You are a superwoman supewriter! Good luck with the conferences.

Well, I do really enjoy conferences and the time to celebrate with students and their families. It’s just conferences in the midst of everything else that makes it…well, insane!
