March SOLC–Day 21
The Peace of Early Morning
I treasure my mornings
the sweet hush of pre-dawn
when the birds still sleep
and the sun lingers
below the horizon.
The unfolding day
stretches before me
unlimited in its potential.
I treasure my mornings
the coming of light,
a slow deepening blush
on the horizon,
and the gradual birth of
angular tree shadows
striping the lawn,
and the sweet surprise
of the first bird song,
thrilling in the tranquility,
rippling across the morning air.
I treasure my mornings
and the warm gleam
of my solitary light
in this drowsy house
and the muted click clack
of my fingers
on the keyboard,
as I work and wonder with words,
embraced by the growing light
and the peace of the dawning day.
I treasure my mornings.

I am another early riser and I just love this poem about your early morning observations. What a gift this time is, and so energizing when it comes at the start of each day. Your theme here reminds me of Mary Oliver’s great poem “Why I Wake Early.”
“I treasure my mornings
the sweet hush of pre-dawn
when the birds still sleep
and the sun lingers
below the horizon.”
Excellent structure…I love how the first lines of the stanzas track the darkness, the coming of light, then the light itself. Beautifully done.

Lovely words. It wasn’t until this year that I appreciated the mornings so much. Your words about the hush and peace of the house are so comforting. I find myself waking up early just so I won’t miss these peaceful moments

This is beautiful! I especially like the line, “The unfolding day
stretches before me unlimited in its potential.” This encapsulates the thinking I want to have every day.

Your poem is so good! You really are talented. My favorite line was: “the muted click clack of my fingers on the keyboard, as I work and wonder with words.” Truly amazing!

So beautiful, and this morning I was on my way in the dark to help my daughter & son-in-law transport the grand-girls. I heard those first sweet murmurs of birds waking, just like your poem, Molly. Thanks for writing the poem of my morning today. I often am not up so early.

Even though I’m reading your poem at night, it brought a sense of tranquility to me. I can hear that first bird and see the warm gleam. Such a beautiful way to reflect on the start of your day.
