The baby chipmunk
pauses on sun-warmed bricks
delights in the crunch
of scavenged seed
heedless of
the stalking cat

Oh! baby chipmunk! Please tell me that the baby made it. I can picture this scene so vividly.

No comment… (we all knew this was a story that wouldn’t end well…)

So much suspense! At least he’s enjoying the moment! Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com

I’m torn about whether this poem is more positive or negative, but, yes, enjoying the moment is key!

Scoot, baby chipmunk, danger stalks near! You captured this moment (and emotion) perfectly, Molly. 🙂

Thanks, Bridget! I only wish the chipmunk had listened to your (and our) entreaties!

Baby chipmunk! We do not have chipmunks here and I remember well a trip to Colorado with young children and their delight and amazement over chipmunks. Thanks for the memory. I hope the baby survives your cat’s stalking. My cat killed a baby squirrel once and I was devastated.

I’m glad this sparked a fun memory for you. Chipmunks are endlessly entertaining and I can’t imagine not having seen them! 🙂

I love me a baby chipmunk like everyone else, but there are PLENTY in our neighborhood, so I’m going to go with the unpopular opinion: Survival of the Fittest! (Although I wish it was a hawk and not a cat…)

Having outdoor cats creates a lot of turmoil for me (and the local chipmunk population), but our rescued kitties are intent on being outdoors.

Maybe I’ll write a dirge next week…

Oh poor baby chipmunk! Our neighbors have a semi-wild cat and I had the misfortune of seeing him stalking and attacking a bird a couple of years ago, while the bird’s mate sat in the grass nearby. It was heartbreaking to see, even if it is part of nature’s cycle of life.
