Wordle Poems

I start every day with Wordle. It’s a guaranteed morning pleasure…and an occasional frustration. I extend the pleasure each morning by gathering up my guesses and trying to create poems from them. It’s a low-stakes and fun way to generate some poetry in my notebook. I find the combination of words can force me to make interesting and surprising connections I would never have considered otherwise. Here are a couple of recent efforts.

Wordle guesses: alter, spell, whelk, wield

To alter your world

emerge from the hypnotic spell
of the in-and-out tide
of the banal.

Spiral your shell
into gorgeous intricacy,
like a whelk
wielding basic elements
to create complex beauty.

Wordle guesses: grace, point, slunk, funny, bunny

Grant yourself grace

when you wish yourself
elsewhere
wonder what’s the point
and why you haven’t
already slunk far away
from the current scene.

It’s a funny thing
how we join the conga line
or bunny hop along with the herd
even as we yearn
for other places
or spaces
for oases of calm.

Thoughts of the bunny hop led me back to happy childhood memories and a bit of a rabbit hole (ha!) on the internet. Enjoy!

This week’s Poetry Friday is hosted by Linda Mitchell at her blog, A Word Edgewise. She’s sharing a delightfully creative December mash-up! Be sure to check it out!

I’ve been lax about Wordling. After many days away, I solved in two, with a pair of words that seemed a bit of a scary portent. (poem to follow soon) I haven’t been back…

Maybe today is the day to restart the routine…

I have found when I take the time to do this practice, Wordle to poem, I get surprising results. I love the image of spiraling my shell into complex beauty (the beauty that is so unique to nature). I fear that the Christmas season is often tied to a conga line of should, rather than joyful choices. Thanks for sharing. I’m off to try another Wordle poem.

lol! Oh, that bunny hop. Makes me giggle with memories of when I was a counselor at a summer camp. We’d do the bunny hop around the dining hall. I love your wordle poems. It’s amazing to me that you can craft them over and over with such diverse words! Welk has to be my favorite word in the pile.

Molly, you’ve inspired me to try this. Wow, what good poems you made with your guesses. I play Wordle every day, too, and, less successfully, Connections. Oy, that one.

I’m also a Connections fan, but that’s more hit or miss for me. Do you play Spelling Bee? That’s another daily favorite of mine. I hope you do give Wordle poems a try. They’re addictive!

Yes, my husband and I collaborate on Spelling Bee. It’s fun, too. By the way, I started on a Wordle poem yesterday. Thanks for the idea!

I hope you try! I just write my guesses down in my notebook every day, whether I have time to fiddle with them or not. Then, I always have little word pools I can splash around in later!

Wow!!! Your two poems are so amazing! I especially love the “of the banal.

    Spiral your shell
    into gorgeous intricacy,”

So gorgeous and meaningful. I also needed to read your other poem as I often think I should be somewhere else and that poem and title, “Grant yourself grace” is something I will print and reread. I always loved the bunny hop! I’m snowed in today so what a fun way to move inside! thank you for these wonders and the inspiration to combine Wordle guesses into a poem! Brilliant!

I do Wordle every day, too, Molly, & continue to forget your wonderful idea for poems. This time, love both, and the way the 2nd one reads so beautifully in those final lines. Ha! I have thought of the Bunny Hop in a long time. We really did that?
