Garden Lessons

Garden Lessons

The baby chipmunk
pauses on sun-warmed bricks
delights in the crunch
of scavenged seed
heedless of
the stalking cat

Oh! baby chipmunk! Please tell me that the baby made it. I can picture this scene so vividly.

Scoot, baby chipmunk, danger stalks near! You captured this moment (and emotion) perfectly, Molly. 🙂

Baby chipmunk! We do not have chipmunks here and I remember well a trip to Colorado with young children and their delight and amazement over chipmunks. Thanks for the memory. I hope the baby survives your cat’s stalking. My cat killed a baby squirrel once and I was devastated.

I love me a baby chipmunk like everyone else, but there are PLENTY in our neighborhood, so I’m going to go with the unpopular opinion: Survival of the Fittest! (Although I wish it was a hawk and not a cat…)

Oh poor baby chipmunk! Our neighbors have a semi-wild cat and I had the misfortune of seeing him stalking and attacking a bird a couple of years ago, while the bird’s mate sat in the grass nearby. It was heartbreaking to see, even if it is part of nature’s cycle of life.
